FAQ

WHAT IS PERSON-CENTRED THERAPY?

Person-centred therapy is one of the humanistic modalities or approaches. It was founded in the 1940s by the American psychologist Carl Rogers who believed that, given the right conditions, a person can reach their full potential and become their true self, which he termed ‘self-actualisation’. This actualisation process is innate and accessible to everyone.

When you’re attending counselling sessions, you’ll be encouraged to bring your own issues to the session – the counselling is led by you. I will help you to explore your own issues, feelings, beliefs, behaviour, and worldview, so you can become more self-aware and achieve greater independence.

I will aim to help you to realise what resources and support are available to you that you can use to work through your own issues, build your self-confidence and appreciate that you always have options. I will treat you as the expert on yourself, as no-one else knows exactly what it’s like to be you.

I will not judge you, no matter what you bring to the session. This helps build a trustworthy relationship in which you can feel free and supported to disclose whatever is troubling you. I will support you to discover your own abilities and autonomy, so that you can cope with current and future problems.

WHAT IS THE THERAPEUTIC RELATIONSHIP?

Your relationship with your counsellor is very important. It’s important that you have confidence in them and trust them. At any time, you can ask your counsellor anything you want to know. You can ask them about your therapy and question anything you don’t understand. Your therapist will encourage you to do this.

Your therapist will:
- allow you to speak freely and express your feelings

- listen without judgement
- help you to explore your feelings and understand your troubles

- help you to make positive changes and choices in your life

HOW LONG DO SESSIONS LAST?

A session is 60 minutes in duration with 10 minutes to reflect before we leave the space. I will give you warning before the end of the session so it doesn't come as a surprise.

HOW LONG WILL THE PROCESS TAKE?

How long we work together is completely led by you. I am happy to work on a week to week basis. When you feel ready for our sessions to end then you are ready. We can work to a planned ending and discuss how you would like to do this as we go.

CAN I JUST HAVE ONE SESSION AND SEE HOW I FEEL?

Absolutely! This is not a contractual agreement, you can give a session a try and decide if it's the right time for you. If you don't wish to continue there is absolutely no pressure to do so and this can be said at any point in your therapeutic process.

WILL WHAT I BRING TO SESSIONS BE CONFIDENTIAL?

We will always strictly protect your confidentiality and privacy. In your first session we will contract together and outline any situations when we may be required to disclose information about you, but these are
exceptional. Counsellors may take notes or record the sessions in some way for their own professional use. They will tell you how they will do this.

All of our counsellors are registered members of the British Association of Counselling & psychotherapy (BACP) and work to the BACP ethical framework and work to their ethical practice which assures they are providing you with an ethical and effective therapeutic service, with your safety and best interest always front of mind.
